Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken inside the chapel at the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth (Nazareth, KY near Bardstown)

Time

The photo was taken mid-day from inside the chapel in July 2013

Lighting

The inside of the chapel was dim, but it was bright, sunny July day outside. The photo was taken from natural light with no flash.

Equipment

This was shot hand-held with a Canon Rebel T3i using a 55-250mm lens at 109mm. 1/160 sec. f/5.6 ISO 400

Inspiration

Exploring around Bardstown KY, we saw the sign for the Sisters of Charity and drove in, intending to drive through the grounds and leave, but it was so peaceful and quiet, we stopped to stretch our legs. The exterior of the buildings were amazing with their architecture. A huge wooden door with what looked like brass rivets and bands struck my attention. As I was looking at it, a Sister approached and invited me inside. The chapel had a high arched ceiling with exposed ribs and a soft warm glow from the sun coming in numerous stained glass windows and many candles at the altar and high ceiling lights lit the room. It was difficult to stop shooting, but I didn't stray far inside in order to respect the privacy of the Sisters praying at the front.

Editing

I use Lightroom CC and performed basic editing including color enhancement and a little sharpening. For the most part, the image is as it was shot.

In my camera bag

My camera bag has gotten heavier since this image was taken in 2013. At that time I had only the Rebel T3i and 55-250mm lens. Now I still carry the T3i mounted with an Tamron 18-400 mm and a Rebel T6i with a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro. I round out the day with my sturdy 3-Legged Thing "Travis," a Pro-58 MM Variable filter and a Kenko UV Filter.

Feedback

I think the worst mistake photographers take -- and I include myself -- is to forget to put down the camera and feel. Just feel. Experience the moment and the place. Learn what speaks to you. And when something does, figure out what stopped you, called your attention. Then walk around and check different views, wide, narrow, close, distant, high, low. When you've found the sweet spot, THEN use the camera. If you don't know what captured you, then you can't possibly know what to capture for others.
