The photo was taken in Bakar Bay, Adriatic sea, Croatia. Taking a walk at the seaside I saw this submerged boat. It looked forgotten, from another side of a mirror.Time
It was a winter day, surprisingly without wind. The sea was so calm and dreamy. It rarely is in this time of year. The photo was taken very late afternoon in February, 2004.Lighting
Winter day with low angle of light, even in the middle of a day. And a water surface which usually reflects the sky, not allowing you to see underneath. I had a unique opportunity to take this picture with sea water so calm and so clear and almost no reflections at all.Equipment
I used Fuji FinePix S2Pro, with Nikkor 20mm. No tripod, no flash, just a right moment.Inspiration
It is something from the past. When I was a kid my family had a boat similar to this one. During the winter our boat was always out of the sea. Wooden boats get dry when out of water, and have many cracks, and does not hold water. Before summer vacations, usually in the spring, the boat has to be submerged in the sea for a few days. The wood "drinks", and gets swollen. So, you do not need so much wood filler and painting is easier. Our family wooden boat is long gone, so this scene reminds me off childhood. This boat on the photo no longer exists, some villagers recognized it on the photo, and told me that the owner died years ago, and the boat disappeared... At the present times wooden boats like this one are very rare.Editing
Well, I seldom use post processing, maybe because of my classic film/photography education, or maybe I like the lights and scenes the way they are naturally. No color correction. I did a small level correction and of course, I had to remove dots of dust from sensor (stamp tool). The upper part of this photo was cropped out, maybe 5 mm, just to avoid undesired reflection of mountains. In my camera bag
I won my camera as a first prize for the best national photography in Bolivia, FEBIART 2001. I have a Nikkor 20 mm and a Vivitar 100 - 300 mm, nothing more. I still shoot with the same equipment.Feedback
I used small aperture f/16, to guaranty depth of field, took a deep breath and took one photo of this scene in horizontal and one in vertical format. I seldom take vertical photography, it has something to do with film education. But this one was worth it. Many people saw this boat floating underneath the surface, it was a usual scene those days at the Adriatic sea, but for me it was a much bigger story . Try not to use too much post-processing effects, always look for natural lights and contrasts. Do not exaggerate color in picture. Real contrasts, real color and real lights are beautiful as they are. Do not exaggerate.
