Location
Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch in Gilbert,Arizona.Time
Black-Necked Stilts nest in Gilbert,Arizona in the summer. This is however, the time of the year that is the hottest and the temps. start to climb as well as the light starts to get harsh pretty early.I left my home at 0400 this shot was taken at 0544.Lighting
I was torn about using 8.0 or 7.1 when I saw these beautiful chicks and their Mom.I wanted the depth of field without blowing the whites on the birds.I made a split second decision to use 7.1 and drop my ISO from 400 to 320 due to the gorgeous morning light.Equipment
Canon EOS 40D tripod and ball head 500mm lens no flash.Inspiration
For years I had seen my boyfriends and other photographers shot of these adorable chicks.I wanted one for my self.I wanted to be able to show that a very common bird here in Arizona (Black-necked Stilts) have amazing young and to capture what I felt was a bond between them.Editing
I like to post-process as least as I can. This image is what I consider a shining example of that. All that is done is sharpen, and a bit of contrast and brightness adjustment. In my camera bag
My camera bag has grown over the years! My go-to combo now is Canon EOS 7d and 100-400mm lens.Feedback
Early morning light. There is no way I would have captured this image in the Summer in Arizona in the afternoon sun.Try different angles and perspectives. For this shot I am laying on my stomach on the ground. When you take an image and you feel that it is your best, treat it as such. This is the image I have had published on calendar covers, and gained exposure and notoriety with I am proud of it,I feel like I will forever be linked to this image.Looking back years later,I still know that it is one of my best.I also know that looking back there is nothing I would do to change that or how I took this image.I saw some Mom and baby Black-Necked Stilt laid on the ground an waited for them to get close enough, opted for 7.1 instead of 8.0 and the rest is history!
