Location
This photo was taken on the edge of the lagoon of Milford Sound, located in Fjordland National Park on the south island of New Zealand.Time
The time of the shot was around 6:30 PM during sunset at low tide, looking west.Lighting
The unusual situation with the lighting was that after a period of subtle sunset color in the sky and the light appeared to grow dim, the wind picked up as more clouds moved in and the 'second sunset' show appeared. This lasted over 30 additional minutes beyond normal sunset time. I discovered later that a typhoon to the northwest had pulled in these clouds and wind which created very rare lighting conditions.Equipment
I used a rented Nikon D600 FX camera body with a Nikon 16-35mm f/4 wide-zoom lens, mounted on a Really Right Stuff RRS TVC-24 L tripod & BH-40 LR Ball Head.Inspiration
The location had 'epic beauty' about it and a rare moment with sunset and low tide happen at the same time. The wonderful 'S-curve' left by a stream from the receding tide was a significant composition element. I had to work quickly before the wind caused the stream to dry up and disappear.Editing
I post-processed the image in Adobe Lightroom 5. I boosted both white and black while reducing highlights (to bring out cloud color/details) and also applied adjustment brushes to lighten the hills in the background and boost the clairty and vibrance in the sky color as well as the color in the moss coverered rocks in the foreground. In my camera bag
These days, I have a Nikon D750 FX body, Nikon 24-120mm f/4 telezoom, Nikon 16-35mm f/4 wide zoom, Nikon Micro 105mm f/2.8 lense, wired and wireless shutter releases, B&W 77mm circular polarizer filter, Tiffen 8-stop variable ND filter, and a headlamp along with a 2nd camera battery and numerous SD storage cards.Feedback
Before sunset shots: CHECK WEATHER FORECAST! Always use a tripod and in windy conditions, be prepared to hang a weight like a camera bag or pack under the tripod base for stability. ALWAYS WAIT until dark before finishing....this shot was taken during the '2nd Show' of the sunset. There was a dozen photographers that were part of a workshop who set up in front at the edge of the water where the tide receded to and: did NOT check the stream behind them to include in the shot and LEFT early when the light and began to dim BEFORE the '2nd Show' started.
