Location
This photo was taken a the local park. I decided to do a low shot toward the cloudy sky knowing I was going to do an HDR mix and that would give a deep dark background to go with the black mirrored finish of the Mustang.Time
This shot was taken in the late afternoon on a cool fall afternoon.Lighting
No flash was used, all natural lighting. I had my Father in Law park the car so the sun would be above and behind us. I waited for decent cloud cover to minimize hard shadows. The total time we waited was about 30 minutes.Equipment
I use a Canon T2i with the kit lens EF-S 18-55mm. The lens was set to 18mm and used f-stop of 5.6 and set ISO to 100. I shot in Manual and RAW. I use a basic tripod that was given to me as a gift. I shot with 5 step bracketing -2 -1 0 1 2 and combined them in Photoshop for the final result.Inspiration
My father in law had just purchased a new Mustang 5.0 Cobra and was looking for a poster he could hang in his garage. After not being able to find one, he asked if there was anything I could do to make an "Out of the box" make people stop and look photo. I had started playing with Surrealistic HDR on a recent vacation to the Hoover Dam but never produced any photos close to some of the ones I had seen on sites like Viewbug and other places. This gave me the chance to stage the photo the way I wanted and take as many photos with out being surrounded by tourists and other distractions. I had taken 30 plus different angles and close ups of different parts of the car and finally decided on this one.Editing
Using the 5 Bracketed photos in Adobe bridge, importing to Photoshop using the import as HDR mode, I played with the settings until I achieved the color of the sky and asphalt I was wanting. The car was parked over a few yellow parking lines I removed in Photoshop as well as removing a Cell phone tower and some trees that stretched out over the top of the car.In my camera bag
I carry my Canon T2i with Kit lens and a generic Digital flash. I also have a 100-300mm telephoto lens and have just recently added the Canon ef 50mm f/1.8 II and the EF-S 60MM f/2.8 to my bag.Feedback
Study other HDR photos and pay attention to the light source. Overcast skies and low light really help with the Surrealistic HDR photos I like to take. Tripods are a must and I have just invested in a remote trigger. Some of the photos I have taken for HDR have been ruined due to pressing on the shutter release and moving the camera. Be creative and have fun.
