Behind The Lens

Location

In Northern Michigan there has been a huge influx of the Snowy Owl. We have had the pleasure of observing them for the last couple months so far. I never get tired of seeing them, though I'm sure the mice do. Mother Nature makes it so easy for us to capture images like this.

Time

These Owls are active pretty much all day as we travel the open farmlands and try to decipher what is a lump of snow and what is an owl.

Lighting

Overcast days work well to get pics of these beautiful birds. Bright days are hard to photograph with the reflexion of light off the snow and the owls eyes aren't as wide open due to the intense lighting.

Equipment

I shoot Nikon equipment (not that it matters) with a 200-400mm lens on a tripod. Sometimes the owls let you approach closely and sometimes they fly at over 100 yards before you can capture their picture.

Inspiration

It's very easy to be inspired by these gorgeous birds. Owls and birds of prey are some of my favorite subjects. I really have to give credit to a couple of friends that have taken me under their wing and taught me so much about my equipment and the art of wildlife photography. Thank you Steffon and Chris..

Editing

I do very little post processing. A little enchancement or cropping perhaps.

In my camera bag

I usually carry a bag with a variety of lenses but find I take only my Telephoto lens and tripod into the field. (I don't own pack horses)

Feedback

As in any wildlife photography, patience and being there at the right time play a big role..
