Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a small village called Boronti, which is located in the district of Purulia, West Bengal. It was a small weekend winter family trip. I took this photo from inside the car plying through a bumpy road, which is also partly visible in the bottom right corner of this photo.

Time

It was around 5.15 in the evening when we were entering the village. Since it was winter, the surrounding was a bit foggy.

Lighting

The setting sun itself was dominating the entire scene. I didn't have to look for any special lighting. All I wanted to get the reflection of the sun and the small hill in the backdrop on the water of the lake.

Equipment

I used a Canon 600D camera with 18-55mm lens with a UV filter attached to it. No tripod, flash or additional filter was used in this photograph. Exposure for this photo was Shutter speed: 1/640, Aperture: f/10, ISO: 400

Inspiration

While entering the village, the most inspiring thing I found was the light of the evening golden hour. Because it was winter, there was hardly any wind blowing. The whole scene was filled with a golden tint with perfectly reflected sun and the hill on lake water with almost no wave.

Editing

Yes. I only increased the contrast by 5 units. No exposure, gamma or curve processing was done.

In my camera bag

The time I took this photo (2014) I used to carry in my bag a Canon 600D camera, one 18-55 lens, one 55-250 lens, two 58mm UV filters, one extra camera battery and one battery charger.

Feedback

I believe village life has many interesting stories to offer, especially the golden hours, i.e. during sunrise and sunset. Village life vastly differs from city life. I would suggest to wake up early, take your camera bag and start walking through the village. Be watchful for the life actions of village people. Many villages have cultivation lands where you would definitely find a lot of interesting subjects including birds. The window for the best photography is short. Best photos are mostly clicked in the golden hours. The Exposure Triangle is very important in golden hours. Don't be afraid of taking a few shots at different exposures. Once you are satisfied with your exposure, use it. One more thing to remember is photography requires time, patience and a lot of walking. So take your time.
