Behind The Lens

Location

Yarmouth , Isle of Wight, UK

Time

Early evening and after work, on the eve of the Old Gaffers festival in Yarmouth an annual sailing event of all things old and wooden.

Lighting

The solent can provide great back drops, e.g. cliffs, marinas, boats or just the sea in sunset or rises, as I do a lot of sailing photography. Being there early morning, or my favorite is sunset, as the colours are a lot warmer, but as always you need to keep an eye on the weather and hope for a good sunset, as they do not always happen with a lot of colour in them. If it has been a sunny day, you will get something and actually being out on the water give you new and different opportunities to take sunset photographs.

Equipment

Nikon D100 and a 70-300mm lens, hand held

Inspiration

The sun was setting and I wanted to take a sunset shot of all the boats in the harbour, however the sun was quite strong and when looking for a suitable place to take this sunset shot, I saw an opportunity to take it through a union jack flag that was being flown by one of the Old Gaffers, and thought I would try something different. I took a few shots as there was a light breeze and the flag was flapping in the wind. I am pleased with the result, as it is something different to the usual sunset shots

Editing

Only slight brightness and contrast corrections

In my camera bag

Nikon D100 now replaced by a D90, plus 70-300 and 28-100mm, plenty of cloths, water, waterproof bag for the kit, spare batteries and lots of memory cards

Feedback

Look for something unusual, e.g from a different angle, try and go away from the standard sun on the horizon, we are all guilty of this, but is it an interesting photograph?, perhaps not, why not try and get a reflection of a sunset in a window of a building, or in a puddle. I have taken shots of sunsets in glass bricks before and it's different. Incorporate a tree, or other object. Yes you may have to walk a few feet from away, but it's worth it. I once stopped my car in the middle of the road (in a safe area) and got out and stood in the boot of the car to get some height so I could capture a sunset over a town, I only took one shot, but I did hear a passer by say “it must have been a good shot” I never saw them as I got back into the car and headed off. Yes I did get the shot. Alternatively why not go from a low angle, there are plenty of sunsets throughout the year, experiment is my advice and do not be afraid to break the rules.
