Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my studio.

Time

It was taken in the evening after sunset. Since my studio has large windows, shooting in the evening made it easy to control the lighting without any issues of ambient light being introduced.

Lighting

I really wanted to enhance the beautiful facial structure of the model so I decided to use a mixture of soft and hard light. I used a clamshell setup,with a medium white beauty dish as the key light and a medium octabox as a fill from below. I had the makeup artist add a bit of shimmer to the model's skin to really enhance her features, and the beauty dish helped bring out the specular highlights.

Equipment

I shot this on a Canon 5D Mark II with a 70-200 f2.8 lens. 2 Elinchrom D-Lite RX 4's were used in this shot with a medium white beauty dish and medium octabox as the modifiers. I always tether to Capture One to preview photos, check exposure & focus. Capture One is my go-to tethering program because of how it handles skin tones. It does a much better job than any other RAW converter on the market.

Inspiration

I was inspired by the amazing photographer, Zemotion who always has an ethereal look to her images.

Editing

As mentioned before, I tether to Capture One and it is there that I correct skin tones. I then bring it into Photoshop to clean up blemishes and distractions, dodge & burn, and finally some color toning. It is important to me to keep all the skin texture intact, and I find dodging & burning keeps it looking real. Frequency separation has its advantages but I don't think it should be used on skin as it can really destroy the image if done incorrectly.

In my camera bag

What you would find in my bag is my trusty Canon 5D Mark II, a variety of lenses including the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 II, Canon 24-70mm f2.8, Canon 100mm f2.8, and a Canon 50mm f1.4. I also have an X-Rite colorchecker passport to ensure proper white balance, a wallet full of CF cards, PocketWizards, extra batteries, lens cleaning kit, micro fibre cloth, tether cables, and lots of business cards.

Feedback

For anyone wanting to try something similar, I would suggest using a clamshell lighting setup as it is fairly easy to setup, and gives you a classic beauty look. In terms of retouching, less is more - make sure you keep skin texture intact and whatever you do, do not use any 3rd party plugin or action that may blur the skin. These will ruin your images. Instead, practice and master the dodge & burn technique which has been around since the beginning of photography. Most importantly, experiment lots and make sure to have fun!
