Behind The Lens

Location

I spent a few hours testing a newly acquired 10mm macro lens, shooting insects in the park just outside my home. On the way back I noticed the flowers just outside the building. This baby spider was in one of the flowers. I took a few shots.

Time

This was taken around noon.

Lighting

All natural light at f/7.1 handheld. I have darken the background in post to make the flower and side stand out.

Equipment

This was handheld at f/7.1 with a Canon 7D and EF 100mm 2.8L macro lens. Ambient light. This set up really is great.

Inspiration

I was testing a newly acquired macro lens in the park just outside my home. On the way back I noticed the flowers and the baby spider in one and thought that it was a rare shot that I just had to take before it moves away. It stayed throughout and I managed to take a few shots. I was pretty pleased to get this shot.

Editing

Yes, all in LR5. I darkened the background which was bokeh of leaves to make the flower and the spider stand out.

In my camera bag

Now, an a7rII, TSE 24mm, 15mm, 35mm, EF 70-200mm, filters, filter holder, step up rings, lens adapters and remote trigger.

Feedback

Don't pack up after a shoot, a rare shot happens strangely when you have finished shooting. It happened to me a few times. Luckily, I made it a habit to pack up when I get back to the car. There is no right or wrong in photography, there is only you to capture the image that you have envisioned. Look at images in magazines or Internet and ask yourself why and what you like in the photo. All these will be in your head and comes in handy when on location. It is very helpful to understand the rules of composition in photography to create a photo that you can be proud of. These rules are useful and works most of the time, but more importantly don't be afraid to step out of the box or push the envelope yet bear in mind that your safety comes first. Always plan the shoot like weather, tide, sun location and so on, so when you are on location all you have to worry is catching that light as you want it to be. Most important, aim to capture the image in you head. Enjoy the moment and always be safe.
