Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Kota Kinabalu / Sabah / Borneo / Malaysia, in the city's fish market. I spotted the young girl playing in the rain on a jetty close to the market & I took a few photo's. She then went inside the market building & I took a few more pictures. I asked her if it was ok for me to take photo's and she shook her head meaning no, so I did not take any more.

Time

Photo was taken around 3pm, the day was dismal, raining & very overcast. It was dark inside the market & I would have liked to have had my Lumix GH3 with me but I only had my Leica C (Point & Shoot)

Lighting

I had to make the most of the dismal conditions. I did not want to use the flash as it was a candid shot & I did not want to attract any attention. Looking back now the dark conditions were suitable for this photo.

Equipment

Camera was Leica C (Type 112) Fixed Lens: Vario-Summicron F2.8 / no tripod / no flash / Aperture f/5.9 / ISO: 400 / Exposure: 1/25

Inspiration

One of my favourite places to take photo's is in food & fish Markets in Asia, the people are interesting & dark buildings with little light are always good for those "dark side" shots. I always head for the markets & this girl was in & around the market building playing with her friends, I wanted to photograph her because she had a interesting face, I think she was about 10 years old. I live in Melbourne / Australia & enjoy traveling to Asia mostly Indonesia, Malaysia, Borneo & Lombok.

Editing

I use Lightroom & Picmonkey, not much P/P with this photo. I just darkened the shadows & added more contrast, smoothed her skin a little & slightly enhanced the whites of the eyes.

In my camera bag

Most favoured camera is my Lumix GH3 fitted with battery holder & a GH2 for back-up. I have a "Think-Tank" "carry on size" case with all my gear in & a Lowepro Flipside Sport 15L Back-Pac which I use on Photo-Shoots, I select the lenses that will be needed for the days shoot & they are packed into the Back-Pac. I also have a "Domke" shoulder Bag.. Lenses: Leica / Vario-Elmar f3.5-5.6mm / 14-150mm // Lumix / f4.0-5.6mm/100-300mm // Lumix f4 / 7-14 mm (fisheye) // Leica / Macro-Elarit f2.8 / 45mm // Voigtlander-Nokton f0.95 / 25mm // Lumix G Vario f2.8 / 35-100mm / Lumix G Vario f2.8 / 12-35mm // Metz 50AF flash // spare Battery's // Spare Memory Cards // ND Filters // Manfrotto Tripod // Dolica: Carbon-Fibre Tripod thats fits onto Back-Pac

Feedback

If you are into these "Dark-side" type photo's it's the markets, back-alley's & Old Buildings to head for. With this shot I only used ISO 400 but mostly use OSI 1,000+ I am not concerned about the grain affect. Its important to find the style you like & just create photo's that you enjoy, sometimes thats hard as you cop a lot of criticism, so many photographers are trying for the perfect photo's i.e: exposure, lighting etc but they forget about the art side of it. I like to go on photo-shoots by myself, the last thing you want is distractions when you are trying to focus on finding the right shots, when you find what you are looking for take plenty of photos. Many of my photo's are candid shots, so be quick & don't attract attention i.e. using a flash.
