Photo was taken at Hastings, in East Sussex on the south coast of England using a tripod, my old Samsung GX20 DSLR, and a Sigma 10-20 wide angle lens at 10mm (f-4.5, ISO 100, Exposure: 1-180).
I wanted to capture the entire pier in a wide angle shot. Firstly, I noticed the cloud formations, then the setting sun under-lit the clouds and lit-up the pier buildings in gold, intensifying the reflection in the wet sand. When quickly trying to frame the shot, I initially saw the fisherman as an unwanted distraction – but soon realised he would provide good foreground interest, and should absolutely feature in the shot as Hastings has always been a fishing town. RAW image post-processed in Lightroom5 (contrast, WB, exp, vignette) then lightly processed in HDR Efex Pro2 in order to produce this near-NDR "Natural Dynamic Range".
Very sadly, in the early hours of 5 Oct 2010 the pier (opened in 1872) suffered a devastating fire that destroyed 95% of its superstructure.

Stunning image Mick. The fisherman in the foreground definitely enhances this composition.

The setting sun shone on the already yellow Hastings Pier, rendering it almost golden. Literally "Golden Hour"!Equipment
My old Samsung GX20, Sigma 10-20mm wide open on a solid Slik Pro tripod (although buried quite deeply in the wet sand to avoid movement!).Inspiration
The hope of capturing some of the soul of the old English fishing town of Hastings.Editing
Basic editing of the RAW file in Adobe Lightroom to bring the image back to close to what I saw on the day; saved to TIFF. Then to emphasize the cloud formations, and make the most of the available image information I used a subtle measure of HDR processing via HDR Efex Pro2; output to JPEG.In my camera bag
Nikon D750 plus Nikkor 70-200 f2.8; Pentax K5 and the trusty Sigma 10-20mmand a Sigma 50mm f1.4 prime for portraiture.Feedback
Golden hour, in the right conditions, will utterly change the character of the subject of your image. Always if you can, "wait for the light".
