Behind The Lens

Location

This is a photo of Marblehead Lighthouse near Toledo Ohio on the shores of Lake Erie. The lake was frozen so it was an opportunity to walk out on the ice and get this perspective.

Time

Unfortunately I arrived later then I wanted because of some winter road conditions so I missed the sunrise. This was taken an hour or so after sunrise.

Lighting

As you can see it was pretty overcast so no direct sun.

Equipment

I shot this with my Nikon D7100 and a 12-24 Tokina wide angle lens. I actually did this as a hand held shot but I bracketed the exposure with 3 shots, -2, 0, +2 and made it into an HDR photo.

Inspiration

The build up of ice here was the reason for this trip. With the sun shinning on it it took on a blue color.

Editing

Yes, It is a handheld 3 exposure HDR, -2, 0, +2 and then tonemapped in Photomatix Pro and then processed further with Photoshop CS6 and onOne Perfect Effects.

In my camera bag

My standard Nikon D7100 with either my Tokina 12-24mm or my Nikor 70-200mm f/2.8. I also carry a spare battery and circular polarizer filters.

Feedback

Normally I would have used a tripod but in this case I handheld this. I got on my knee and braced myself which gave me a nice low perspective so I could include the foreground ice, an important element for me on landscape photos.
