Moonset

This is the change of tides on the Calle Calle river in Southern Chile.

When there is no wind it's some of the stillest water I've experienced. I was fortunate on this particular night to have all the right conditions. The moon was just quarter full. It looks like a full moon because of the long exposure - if it had actually been a full moon it would have been far too bright to make this photo possible without using composite techniques.

The lighting on the trees comes from the windows of a grand old hotel behind me, one of the few to survive the tremendous earthquake and tidal wave that swept through the area in 1960 (still on record as the world's largest, over twenty times more powerful than Fukushima).

Indeed this island used to be covered in houses, now there is just a tiny museum commemorating the quake.

Submerged on the right you can just make out the skeleton of a boat, almost submerged by the high tide.
