Location
I took this photo in an area of Wyoming known as Boxelder Canyon. It is just outside of Glenrock, Wyoming.Time
I believe it was around 7:30pm in the evening, the sun was almost finished setting.Lighting
Mother Nature gets all the credit for the lighting; it was a very beautiful evening.Equipment
My Nikon D3200 and 18-55mm Nikon kit lens that came with my camera.Inspiration
We were out driving on the back roads one afternoon and we didn't get home until after dark. It looked like winter was finally over and we were out enjoying the beautiful weather, the wildflowers, and all of the pretty sights that come with summer. We pretty much only get two season in Wyoming - winter and summer. This is the time of year when the ranchers start putting their horses and livestock out to pasture, and I love it because it's a sign of summer and the horses are so beautiful and magnificent. I hadn't had my DSLR that long, so I was practicing while we were out on the back roads. We turned down this dirt road, saw the horses in the pasture, stopped the truck and got out for awhile. The wild horses won't come near people, but usually the ranch horses will come up to the fence line when a person is there. Anyhow, it was a beautiful evening, in a beautiful area of the state, I was practicing my photography, and these beautiful horses came up to the fence line - this horse in particular seemed very friendly, almost like he enjoyed the camera, and that's what inspired me to capture this image.Editing
I did a little bit of post-processing in Elements; I'm in the process of learning the digital darkroom. I adjusted the levels and the HSL to bring out more of the evening colors. In my camera bag
At this time I only had my Nikon D3200 and the 18-55mm lens that came with my camera, and I also had my Nikon Coolpix point and shoot. Since then I have added two lenses, an 18-105mm Nikon lens and a 55-300mm Nikon lens. I have a lens hood and UV filter on each of my lenses and I have a few ND filters for my 18-55mm lens. I always have a lens pens and a microfiber cleaning cloth.Feedback
The settings on my camera were f8 at 1/30 of a second, 1000 ISO. Since then I have learned to keep my ISO lower than 1000 because of the noise. I usually shoot in Aperture Priority, but I started learning to shoot in manual mode and using exposure compensation because it helps in low light situations. My advice is probably the same as the advice from other photographers - if you want to photograph the outdoors, nature, wildlife, and landscapes, you just need to get out there. Also, practice as much as possible and learn as much as possible, but remember you don't have to do it all in one week or one month, etc; there isn't a deadline and I don't think it's good to overwhelm yourself. Remember to have fun, enjoy the learning curve, and follow your heart.
