Behind The Lens

Location

Took this photo while heading for a fashion photo shoot. The girl is this image was (obviously) the model, and when I took this specific photo, we were passing by a shoe store.

Time

It was around 11 AM in a cloudy day in Bucharest, Romania. Being cloudy meant nice, uniform lighting, which can be seen in the final image.

Lighting

Not much to say, actually. I had some strobes and a reflector with me, but as I was saying we were heading to location so I didn't had much time to set up lights. So when I saw her looking towards the edge of the frame I instantly knew that this photo would look great. I framed it and pressed the shutter. The clouds and White Balance (cloudy, if you were wondering) took care of the rest.

Equipment

This one was shot using my Nikon D90 with a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 lens @ f/2.8 if I recall correctly.

Inspiration

I wasn't so much about inspiration as it was about being in the right place at the right time and being able to see the frame few seconds ahead. And this one come only with practice. Practice makes it perfect, after all.

Editing

A bit. Enhanced the skin texture and color, re-framing and some color adjustments. I try to keep it light and as natural as possible, usually.

In my camera bag

Well, it depends. I use mostly one lens, Sigma 50mm f/1.4. Usually, when I go for a walk or scouting new locations I take only my D90 with this lens, since I already know that I'll use this lens on a shooting. When I'll go for a shoot I take a reflector with me, a flash (a Nissin Di622) with a shoot-through umbrella or a small octobox, to lighten up the shadows.

Feedback

Think every moment in advance. Try to be focused on what is going on around you, and see if you can predict subject's movement and/or reactions. Make the subject feel comfortable around you so you'll have more candid shots. And shoot as much as possible because as I said before, practice makes it perfect.
