This is so lovely. I lived in the South and Midsouth for awhile and loved meeting and listening to people. I wish I had a camera then that could capture some of the most lovely people I have ever met. Many of them did not like their photos captured, but they are in my mind and heart.

Location
I took this photo in my hometown, Iloilo City, the Philippines. This is quite ironic because as a photographer, I wanted to shoot the shot of my life. I've searched high and low. I've travelled near and far. Only to realize that with more keen eyes, the hidden gem is actually just around the corner. You just need to see things with your heart. Rosalinda is a sidewalk vendow, peddling cigarettes, among others, in downtown Iloilo.Time
I took this picture at around 11 AM. As a portrait photographer, I am always in search of an outstanding subject- the face that spells CHARACTER. And when I find her/him, the time of the day is immaterial. I make use of what is available at that given time and space. And when some elements are not really cooperating with you, you can shoot really tight and zero in on just the face in order to tell your story.Lighting
I only use natural light. I became known as a photographer who can find the light and use it accordingly. Because the light was a bit harsh, I brought her in the shaded part of the sidewalk and the concrete pavements and walls probably provided as a natural reflector.Equipment
I used Nikon D200 and the 105 mm macro lens. There was no flash used.Inspiration
That day, I was looking for a face that would show too much textures. So I took a stroll in downtown Iloilo. I saw her from afar. I know that day was gonna be an extraordinary one. She was so beautiful in her own way. I was even more inspired to shoot her when I learned that she was practically peddling all of her life. She was deaf. She was oblivious to what I was saying as she narrated the stories of her life. I had an adrenaline rush and i took countless pictures of her. I've won so many competitions with her as my subject and I've landed lots of cover pictures in magazines all over the world because of that chance encounter. She made me the photographer that I am today. She inspired me to improve my storytelling in my portraits.Editing
As the light was not ideal, I have to brighten up the face more. Since her hair was dyed pink (yes, you heard it right - pink), I decided to convert the picture to black and white. I also enhanced the wrinkles by improving the contrast. In my camera bag
Now, I am a Sony endorser. My favourite camera now is the Sony A7R. Amazing camera. My carry-around lens is the 24-70 Zeiss lens. I can go on a travel expedoition for a month with just those two things in my bag - plus of course my mobile phones. I still do not use flash.Feedback
Shoot from the heart. Capture something that connects to the affective dimension of your viewers. Emotions (whether it come from your subject, or from the way you incorporate the dramatic available light, or from the use of the elements in a given context) should be the keystone of your picture.
