I spent a long time tracking this doe and her fawn. When that moment came and I first saw them the whole world seemed to come to a stop. The two were below me standing in the tall grass and she was looking right at me. My camera was around my neck with my hands on it waist high. I knew I dare not keep her gaze so I looked down at my feet and froze. An old injury was causing my back to ache no, burn, because of my position but I just kept still. Finally the doe took her eyes off me. I guess she figured I was no threat. She began to pay attention to the fawn and that was my chance to change my position, get some relief for my back and raise my camera to my eye. I was shooting on manual and one glimpse into the eyepiece showed me I was way off on my exposure. I had been shooting out in the open with lots of light, now I was in the woods under heavy tree cover and low light. F/5.6 was all the aperture had on my inexpensive Tamron lens, and in my view finder I see the doe and fawn posed exactly as you see them in this photo. Without even thinking, I pressed the ISO set button on the old D50 and raked my left thumb across the command wheel to jack the ISO through the roof. A split second (or less) later I was still slightly underexposed, but very acceptable. So I started shooting. Before I could even say thank you the pair were off like a rocket into the brush. In hind site I wish I had dropped the exposure to around 1/125 and then adjusted the ISO, but I may have missed the shot, it was that close.
