Behind The Lens

Location

Funny story—I took it in the foyer of my parents house. It’s super small and the ground is hard tile, so there isn’t a lot to work with.

Time

Middle of the afternoon, although you’d never know since it’s so dark!

Lighting

I used artificial lighting for the whole thing. There is no natural sunlight or light in general, which was a huge challenge for me. I used old lamps and light bulbs to get that shadow effect.

Equipment

I used an old canon point and shoot for this photo—I didn’t have my nice DSLR until a couple years later.

Inspiration

The photo actually features my twin sister, who is super good at fake laughing, and that combined with the old lamps and bulbs made me really curious about what I could produce photographically. You see the result!

Editing

Absolutely! Everything that’s black in the photo had to be made darker, and I actually edited out one of the lamps.

In my camera bag

I try to keep my bag as light as possible so that I’m always challenging myself to try harder. Usually just the camera, one or two lenses, sometimes a tripod, and an extra memory card are all I have on me when shooting.

Feedback

Often times, we want our models to try and catch a certain look that is real and comes from within, but having my sister fake laugh turned out to be the best thing for the photo. So use those resources in your house, even if you don’t think it’ll produce something great. Capture your model having fun, and don’t elimate the small spaces around you just because you don’t have a clear vision. Now that I’ve worked with artificial lighting, I want to do it again!
