I made the photo at Mount Rushmore, South Dakota, USA. It was Independence Day.Time
I made the photo at exactly 9:53:18 PM on July 4th 2012.Lighting
We were there to join the Independence Day celebration from the afternoon until at night. They did laser lighting on that night because there was fireworks banned because of drought. Laser lighting was successful. While we were watching the program dedicated to all veterans I have my 5D Mark II do star trails and have my 7D focused on the stage.Equipment
I used my Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon Lens EF16-35mm f/2.8L II USM. Manfroto 190XPROB, Canon Remote Controller TC-80N3, 2 Sand Bags, cellular phone (to track the North Star)Inspiration
I am so in love with Astrology. It was independence Day. To make memories on that Day was awesome and of course I was thinking it must be documented through taking photos of those stars and the Mount Rushmore with the 4 faces of the great people doing great things on earth. For me Mt. Rushmore represents great work of art. Just imagine carving faces on those big boulders is very tough but they did it. I thought also that by capturing the star trails would add drama and make the photo more interesting.Editing
Yes, you cannot do star trails in the camera. I took series of photos and uploaded it through my lightroom and of course I went to upload those as stack images on my photoshop and combine those images. In my camera bag

First, PLAN. What to plan? subject, time of the day, location. have checklist on the needed gadgets to produce the image you wanted. Carefully check those gadgets, flashlight if there is battery, check the battery of your camera because taking star trails will consume lots of power in your battery especially in cold nights. Show up in the location ahead of time so you can check where to position your tripod and you can still frame your composition. Before pursuing the photo hunt you need to check the weather. Weather really matters when taking photo of stars, star trails, milky way, blood moon, comets, and meteors. Lastly, have your wit with you. You need to focus leave your problem behind and enjoy the moment of taking photos, your mood will really affect your artistry.
