Behind The Lens

Location

Don was one of several images I captured in a Masai Village in Tanzania, as we toured and learned about this amazing culture.

Time

It was late morning and we were invited into the Masai Chief's hut. Inside it was totally dark, and I knew staying closer to the doorway would provide me with some natural light. Don was across from me and his "Marlboro Man" appearance just glowed as he looked outside.

Lighting

I was only able to use natural light in the Masai village, but sometimes it is perfect. On this visit, the morning was overcast and the light was fairly flat, until we entered the Masai hut, then the clouds opened. I got lucky that day, and Don's face was perfectly illuminated.

Equipment

This image was captured with a Canon 5D mark2 and a 24-105 f4L lens.

Inspiration

It was not inspiration that morning that allowed me to capture this image, it was being sensative and aware of the light. Looking for an opportunity, and lucky enough to react.

Editing

I primarily use Silver Effects Pro with Adobe Lightroom. Combining these two softwares gives me almost unlimited control.

In my camera bag

My primary bag contains the Canon5D mark 2, the 24-105 F4L IS, 70-200 F2.8L IS, 16-35 2.8L. Recently I have also been carrying the Fuji X-T1 with the 18-135 3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR as a backup and walk around. An impressive smaller camera.

Feedback

Look for the light.
