The tree and berries alone is stunning - add the cardinal and it is a masterpiece!! Great shot!!

Location
This was taken in my backyard in East-Central Iowa. We had just been hit with the biggest ice storm in years and luckily for me, the red berries were still hanging on my Washington Hawthorne tree. Typically the birds have already eaten them all by this time of year (mid-December). I used a camping tent as a blind and was actually photographing birds in a different part of the yard. Luckily this flash of red caught my eye and I turned the camera and took 2 shots before he flew.Time
I took this about 4:00 p.m. in mid-December nearly 10 years ago.Lighting
The sky was overcast. I did not use flash since the bird was about 75 feet away.Equipment
For this shot, I used a Canon 5D body with 100-400mm lens on Bogen 3221 tripod with 3055 ball head.Inspiration
I have always loved shooting images of birds. Like I said above, I was actually set up to shoot birds near a feeder in a different part of the yard, when I got lucky and caught a glimpse of this male cardinal landing in the tree.Editing
I didn't use any special processing other than the RAW conversion, a little cropping and fine-tuning of the color/ white balance. In my camera bag
I use a F-Stop Gear Ajna photo backpack and admittedly carry way too much gear into the field :-) I have two camera bodies: Canon 5D Mark III, and the 7D Mark II. For lenses, I have a 100-400mm, 180mm macro, 24-105mm and 16-35mm. I have a set of extension tubes to aid in close focusing and also a 36 inch sliver/ gold reflector for adding a little fill light. My current tripod is a Gitzo 2531 with a RRS BH-40 ball head. In addition, I also have spare batteries, memory cards, etc.Feedback
First of all, I suggest getting outside even if the weather is not ideal. Many of my best shots come from days when I almost stayed in the house rather than getting outside to explore. In the case of this cardinal, I wish I had moved one of my bird feeders nearer to the ice covered tree and I might have had some even better photo opportunities!
