Location
This photo was shot at El Matador State Beach, Malibu, California.Time
It was sunset on my birthday!Lighting
Because I was shooting directly into the setting sun the scene contained extreme bright highlights and very dark shadows. I took three exposures to mask together the sky, mid ground and foreground. I was really digging the highlights bouncing off the swirling water and textured rocks and tried to compose to feature them.Equipment
Canon 5D Mk III, Canon 16-35 2.8L II, Lee Big Stopper 10 Stop ND Filter, Hoya Evo Polarizing Filter, Really Right Stuff tripod & head, remote release.Inspiration
I’m not a big fan of Birthdays. I can’t say why really but while some people look at them as a celebration of life I’ve always looked them as being one step closer to the grave, that and I’m also not comfortable with people making me the center of attention. So year after year I valiantly try and put on a happy face while in my head I am counting the seconds until the day passes. This year was entirely different. I decided to focus on me. I took the afternoon to myself and hit the road with a favorite companion, my camera. We wound up on the California coast. As a lifelong Californian I’ve explored most of the southern California coastline but I’d never been to El Matador State Beach so on a whim I pulled over. What an incredible gift the birthday gods gave me that afternoon. The sky was a tie-dyed wonderland and the tide was at perfect level revealing so many interesting tidbits. I learned a great lesson that day. Nature gives the best birthday presents ever.Editing
Lightroom adjustments for capture sharpening, lens correction, and basic adjustments. Photoshop used to mask the three exposures together, adjust the mid tones & highlights and sharpen for web. Dodge & burn highlights and shadows through luminosity selections. I also added a light glow with a gaussian blur.In my camera bag
I'm a gadget girl at heart so my bag is always full. It makes me happy except when I'm climbing up that steep hill. Camera, various lenses (I'm a huge believer in renting lenses I don't own to fit whatever situation I will be in), Lee ND & grad filters (can't get enough long expo water shots), remote release, Hoodman loop, multiple flashlights, Pano head and nodal slide for panoramas, extra batteries & memory cards, extra lens cloths (I'm always loosing those) sunscreen & lip balm...small weatherproof speaker (I love music when I'm shooting but not headphones.)Feedback
I'm a control freak and a big time planner. I usually have a checklist encompassing location, gear & shot concept, just to name a few things. However, I've learned that some of my best shots happen when I free myself, set out on an unplanned adventure and let creativity just happen organically. I also found it's when I am happiest. So my advice is just get out there, be happy & shoot!
