Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken over 12,000 feet above sea level in the Rocky Mountains along the path to Fletcher Mountain in Colorado.

Time

This was taken during the mid afternoon.

Lighting

The sun was shining through a clear sky and lit everything evenly.

Equipment

I shot this on a Canon REBEL t3 with 18-55mm kit lens.

Inspiration

I am a nature and abandonment photographer, and when I found these ruins on my hike I was excited to combine both into one photo.

Editing

I did not do any post processing on this photo. I felt that the raw image told enough of a story that nothing more was needed.

In my camera bag

I have acquired a bit more equipment since taking this photo. My current bag consists of a Canon REBEL t2i body, a 24-105 f/4 L lens, 50mm f/1.8 and a 55-250mm telephoto lens, all Canon. I also have a Drift Ghost HD POV camera and different portable video lights.

Feedback

Always keep your eye open for unique finds when you are hiking. I started this hike expecting to get a lot of scenic and landscape shots and was presently surprised to find some ruins as well. When coming upon a find like this, try to tell a story with it. Instead of shooting the ruins to document that they were there, I framed it to show the finite beauty of mans works compared to the infinite majesty of the Rocky Mountains. And don't just shoot from eye level either. A low position such as the one this photo was taken from adds another element to the shot, giving a grander feel to all subjects in the shot.
