Location
This photo was taken in an abandoned victorian underground reservoir in Chorley, Lancashire. Sadly it was filled with concrete the week after this was taken.Time
This was shot around 10:30 in the morning. We had to queue up for around an hour to get in to the place as it was the first day to view it.Lighting
Well, there isn't any! there were a few bare bulbs that had been rigged for basic light but it was Very dark inside with no natural light. I didn't want to use a flash as it would have spoiled the look I wanted so I went for a 30 second exposure sans flash.Equipment
I Used a canon 5d mk3 with my 50mm 'nifty fifty' tripodded up. no flash.Inspiration
Well the inspiration hit me all of a sudden to be honest, i wanted to go and record the place before it was filled in but when i arrived i quickly realised there were lots of others doing this so it wasn't needed (still did a few records but after this shot) I realised once entering that this was a really unique opportunity to take a really unique picture and the cover of nick drakes self titled album sprung to mind. Ive always enjoyed that feel of image, I explained to my brother what I wanted to do and we set up the shot there and then. as this is a 30 second exposure I did 5 shots of it and was going to do a composition but the third one came out perfect as it was! On a side note i used iso 100 as i wanted to have no noise on my image.Editing
Post all I did was enhance the shadows a tad and added a sepia style (a preset i made myself) process to it, not too far of what came out of the camera at all. All in lightroom. Wish i could expand further buts thats all i did!In my camera bag
Easy one! my 5d Mk3, my 50mm 'nifty fifty', The amazing cannon 4.0 Is 70-200 (this is my go to lens as it just takes beautiful images), My 2.8 24 - 70L and my canon 530 ex2. Peripherals I always have a trigger in my bag for off camera flash stuff, my phone (for triggertrap) my trusty tripod the Manfrotto Befree Travel and my surface 3 tablet for editing on the go.Feedback
Places like this don't come up often but when they do, make time to go. Don't worry about lots of people going to take photos of the same location. Patience is key (and a very still model) as I wanted to use iso 100 I knew I had my work cut out exposure wise but it was crucial to the image that it was clean so i stuck with it and used arp 2.0 if i recall. Symmetry was the other thing That was paramount for me in this shot so I spent a good ten minutes setting that up even beforeI got my brother in there for a test image. I had 2 people stopping people walking in front of the model as I wanted no ghosting in front of him. The setup is paramount to this type if image in my opinion. As for general advice this is what u usually do with my creative shoots, Rock up and try and think out of the box a little, take inspiration from what you think is cool, don't worry about limitations of your gear or knowledge. See the shot in your mind the set it up and just have a go. if its not working, don't give up on your vision, if it takes all day to get the one shot, your winning. Well thats my ethos!
