About 10 days before the Geminids peaked, I was at Cradle Mountain National Park. The conditions were perfect... no wind, clear sky, and no moon at night. What I was presented with was the entire arm of the Milky Way running from North to South down the sky above the valley. This was a truly spectacular experience, and no photograph can every truly replicate it.
