Location
This photo was taken at The Wave in far north Arizona, west of Page.Time
It was taken in the middle of the day in July. It's the desert, so it was very hot.Lighting
Although typically not the best time of day for landscape photography, the middle of the day is the only time the crevices between the rock are illuminated.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7000 on a tripod.Inspiration
The flowing rock surfaces and leading lines of the sandstone are all around you at this location. I spent a few hours here just roaming around the rock formations and taking pictures of interesting compositions. I thought This spot, to the side of the main Wave everyone is familiar with was particularly interesting.Editing
I did bracket my images and used High Dynamic Range processing to try and make the colors and rock texture really pop.In my camera bag
I probably carry too much equipment in my bag. I typically bring all my long and short lenses along with my large tripod. It does get a little heavy, but I don't want to limit myself in the field.Feedback
The Wave is a really awesome place. Only 20 people are permitted to enter the area every day. 10 permits a day are given out by lottery, with another 10 given out on a first come first serve basis. It's in the remote Arizona desert, so hydration and planning is a must. The hike in is about 3 miles one way. I chose to go in July. It was hot (over 100 fahrenheit) but the monsoon season in July & August provided better odds of getting some interesting clouds. You will want to arrive in time for the mid-day sun in order to get images of the sandstone illuminated. Later in the day, the shadows and bright rock create a high contrast situation. There are all kinds of very cool rock formations throughout the area, and it's difficult not to come away some neat photos.
