Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at Verulamium Park in St Albans. There is a beautiful lake which is home to many birds, ducks and geese. Early summer there are many herons that nest in the trees on an island in the middle of the lake which return year after year.

Time

This was taken on a summer June day at around 12.30

Lighting

At the time of year I took this the lighting was perfect. A bright day but not too sunny.

Equipment

I was using a Panasonic dmc fz28 that I had just bought at the time I took this photo. I have since upgraded to a Canon 70d.

Inspiration

I was sitting by the lake watching a mother duck and her family swimming along when they decided to hop onto the side of the lake one by one. This was the last in line and struggled to get onto the side. I moved forward to capture the moment but with a slightly heavy heart about whether to photograph the little soul or help it to reach its family. I chose the photograph but immediately afterwards he made it onto the side and scuttled off to rejoin the rest.

Editing

No post processing as I felt the photograph was exactly as I wanted.

In my camera bag

This was one of the first photographs I took and I have now progressed to a canon 70d with Tamron 90mm macro lens. A Tamron 16 - 300 and a canon 100 - 400 zoom lens. I also use a mo pod and tripod.

Feedback

I am a complete amature but I am lucky enough to live close to areas where there is lots of photo opportunities. The lakes here at Verulamium and Whipsnade zoo being two of the places I go to most often. Good observations and patience are two qualities I believe are useful. I would also recommend shooting as many pictures as possible using burst mode. Then with a good selection it's possible to choose your favourite. Do not worry about being overly technically correct but choose the pictures you like.
