Location
This photo was taken at my hometown beach, called Hestehovedet Strand, it is a small seaside town in DenmarkTime
The picture was taken during wintertime the 26. february 2014 at 6 pm. I was out on my bike to have some fresh air, clear weather and no wind. So I drove out to the beach, bringing my camera with me, just in case. Arriving at the beach I was struck by the extraordinarily wonderful light around the jetty, the was setting. I had never seen it so almost unnaturally beautiful with the pastel blue and red tones floating like in the sky. I rushed to the bulwork, knowing it was a matter of minutes, maybe seconds, before the light disappeared. The sun was already below the horizon. I got down on my knees and placed the camera at the bulwork and hastily adjusted it and pressed the trigger. I was a newborn selftaught photographer and the camera was quite new to me, so I was extremely lucky to get this kind of a photo.Lighting
I took advantage of the beautiful light emerging from the sunset, no lighting neededEquipment
I shot with my mirrorless camera Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF5, no flash or other equipment. 14-42 mm/F3.5-5.6 lens. used a bulwork for stabilisation.Inspiration
As it was pure luck of being at the right place at the right time, I can't say I was inspired by anything else than the unexpected scenary, which in return was a huge inspiration for me and still is. The jetty has become an icon for my town due to the picture which later received a national award in Sony World Photography Awards in 2015.Editing
I haven't done much postprocessing. The picture was taken as a jpeg, but I did use autolevels in Elements 11, that's all.In my camera bag
Nowadays I usually bring a Canon Eos D6 fullframe camera when I am out shooting. Sometimes also the Panasonic as it is a light camera compared to the Canon. I don't bring a lot of gear, I like to travel with as less equipment as possibleFeedback
I would say that if you don't want to depend of pure luck like me with this picture, you should go study the scenery that you want to capture beforehand, perhaps several times. Know the exact time for the sunset and come early to be prepared. Also try out different angles, be creative and see how you can come around the motive and discover the nature of it. It may take some time to catch the perfect lighting, but when you finally do, it is such a great and satisfying experiance worth sharing with other people.
