This photo was taken off trail in Leadville, Colorado. I saw this abandoned shack while bike riding and was drawn to explore. Inside there was still some old furniture frames and peeling wallpaper - a photographer's dream.Time
I took this shot the early afternoon. I had no intention of being there on the trail at the time - I was supposed to be hiking up Mount Elbert, Colorado's highest peak, but due to an injury I couldn't set out that morning so I opted for a bike ride through the gold rush trails of Leadville.Lighting
I only had natural light to work with which was more than enough in this case. At this particular moment an otherwise sunny day and turned rather overcast much to my delight.Equipment
This was shot with my old reliable Canon Eos 40d using a 17-55 lens.Inspiration
Stories pull me in. I knew this building had a story and I wanted to try and capture that.Editing
Yes - I always shoot RAW so I end up doing quite a bit of processing in Lightroom afterwards. In this shot I added a vignette and adjusted the curves. In my camera bag
A college lecturer once told me that the best camera you have is the one on you. This couldn't be truer. For me it's not about the kit but about what you do with it. I've really imbraced the iPhone and sometimes if I'm hiking and want to travel light all I will bring is my iPhone 5. If I can afford the weight I'd bring my Canon 40d, 17-55 lens and 50 prime lens. I'll bring an speedlight and trigger. I always seem to end up in low light situations so having my 50 prime or my flash gives me a little peace of mind.Feedback
Think about perspective. You'll find me crawling through crass on hopping on fences to try and get a different perspective. Go low. Go high. Get close and get distance. Try something different. Also look around you, think about how objects right in front you that you might be inclined to ignore could in fact help you to frame your composition.
