Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot at a botanical garden in Nashville, TN. The garden has several sections, each with its own theme. This particular shot is from the summer garden where many of the flowers are perennials.

Time

I took this before lunch so the sun was beginning to heat things up.

Lighting

I try to shoot on overcast days so the sun doesn't erase the beautiful colors that flowers can show.

Equipment

I usually shoot with my Nikon D3100 with a 300mm zoom lens. Sometimes I'll pop on some tubes to get a macro effect. I usually never use a tripod, so I have to not breathe or move during the shot. Ha ha.

Inspiration

I love the textures and colors in flowers. They are my favorite subject to shoot besides beautiful open landscapes. In Tennessee, I don't live near any open spaces so I have to find the beauty in the details.

Editing

I usually with just ensure that the photo has enough light and contrast, then I may add some sharpening to it. With flowers such as these, you don't need to add any saturation.

In my camera bag

When I'm walking I usually just hold my camera (Nikon D3100) with my 300mm lens on it. But I keep a waist pack on with a wide angle kit lens and extension tubes for macro shots. That's about it. After a few hours in a garden, I don't want to be too hot or too tired.

Feedback

What I have found to be most useful to me is to pay close attention to the background. I get close, minimize distraction in the background, and try to find something in nature that is pleasing to the eye. That's about it. It makes me happy, so I hope it does you, too!
