Location
I made this photo while I was stationed at Fort Rucker, Alabama sometime during the late fall of 2012 at Lake Tholocco.Time
I made this image along with several others during sunset one evening.Lighting
I just used natural lighting in the photo since the sun gave me just enough light so that I didn't need to use a flash or any equipment to block or create a bounce or fill light.Equipment
I just handheld my Canon Rebel camera with an 18-55mm lens. I didn't use a tripod, flash, or anything else to change the lighting or look of the shot.Inspiration
I was driving home one evening and came upon this area of Lake Tholocco I hadn't noticed before. Since the sun was starting to set and I had nothing else to do I decided to stop and take some sunset photos to post on social media later that night. As I was making the photos I noticed that the sky was starting to look weird and decided to keep shooting until the sun was completely set (which I normally didn't do). Once I posted it on Social Media one of my friends PM'd me and told me that I had captured an unusual phenomenon known as "Night of the Wolf" (Hence the title of the photo). There are several legends related to this night, both in Romanian and Native American Culture. The one I was told was about a young man who became a werewolf at night & how he was killed by his girlfriend's dad by having his throat slit while in his wolf form. It actually sounded a lot like "Little red riding hood" with some minor changes.Editing
I didn't do any post-processing at all when I made this image because it would have taken away from how cool the photo looks in my opinion, however, now that I am in college for photography I wish I had better clarity & focus on it as well as had taken away the two streaks in the trees to the right of the sun.In my camera bag
I always carry my Canon Rebel, 18-55mm lens with Macro lens attached, 75-300mm telephoto lens, wide angle lens, and 1-2 memory cards in my bag. I have started also carrying a tripod with me most of the time as well. Anything else, such as lighting, gels, and boards for making fill or bounce light I take on an as-needed basis.Feedback
The only advice I can give as far as getting a similar shot to this one is to be near a body of water during a sunset with trees around during the months of September to November (The Romanian night of the wolf is November 30 and is similar to the U.S's Halloween). That is all you can do aside from maybe consulting the Farmer's Almanac to see when the sun sets each day and with a little luck, you can capture a similar image.
