Location
Not quite sure of the exact location but it was at a Grand Canyon overlook. I remember that is was pretty close to one of the bus stops, it may have even been the last stop on the loop.Time
Late evening probably around 6:30pmLighting
All natural lightEquipment
Ugh- I took this with my first DLSR, a Pentax K10d with the dreaded lens kit. Probably a 16-55. I was able to get the shot but I wish I would have had some of the professional gear I have now so I could have captured it even better. Oh well, its better than nothing.Inspiration
After a long day of hiking around the canyon and driving there early in the morning from Las Vegas I could tell by the cloud formations that it would be an interesting sunset. Everyone I was with (myself included) were extremely tired and cold- after coming from the desert we weren't aware of how cold it got- but I was able to convince them that the sunset would be worth sticking around for. It most certainly was! When the storm cloud rolled in, it was absolutely amazing to witness all the rain and lightning from a place with clear skies. A true measure of the vastness of the Grand Canyon.Editing
Absolutely! The original photo is an under exposed JPEG!!! I now know to shoot RAW but at the time I wasn't into editing images that much. After 4 or 5 years of having the image, I went in and re-edited the image (mostly dodging and burning) to showcase the actual rain coming from the cloud and a little more detail in the mountains. In my camera bag
NOW I shoot with the Canon 5D Mark III and all L-series lenses which I would have done anything for to have them with me on this particular day.Feedback
The longer you stay out at a particular site, the better the chance you will capture something amazing. I never would have predicted that this would be the scene that unfolded but I'm sure glad I stuck it out. I'd also recommend buying the best gear you can budget for- good glass always trumps camera bodies. I ended up upgrading all my gear to Canon shortly after this trip and wish I would have done so in the first place.
