Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the back garden of the house I was living in at the time in South Africa.

Time

The shot was taken on an overcast day at sunset.

Lighting

It was an overcast day and I loved the photo. The background behind the wall was light grey and bland as a washed out garment, as well as being partially filled by the house next door. I had another photograph from another day that was a fuzzy, warm feeling sunset that was taken at the same place and around the same time of day and that was just the sky. So I replaced the house and insipid grey behind the wall with the ambiance of the sunset that just locked into place as if it had always meant to be there.

Equipment

I used my Sony Cybershot camera and used the automatic settings. I prefer to never use the flash as I find the colours and ambience of the moment are removed with the use of the flash, and the pictures come out far more pleasing with mood, lighting and texture when you allow the natural light and longer shutter speeds. I don't have a tripod or any other fancy gadgets so it often leaves a lot to chance but for an amateur who would rather get the shot, my little Sony does wonders.

Inspiration

My inspiration for the photo was my beautiful little Cherokee. I didn't need any more inspiration than that. It was also a moment that I was thrilled to be able to capture as she did not like having her photo taken and was for this moment more intent on "touching earth" than worrying about what I was doing with my big black clicking thing. That was the inspiration for taking the photo in the first place. Putting the photograph together with the sunset was something I did to honour Cherokee a year later when she passed on and I needed to find a way to ease the pain and to have something special to remember her by.

Editing

I post processed in Photoshop by replacing the background behind the wall with the sunset and selected every leaf painstakingly to keep the tree in the foreground. The colours from the different photographs just blended beautifully together so I did not do anything to the colouring.

In my camera bag

I have a wee little bag that is just big enough to fit my camera in and the charger for the battery. That is all the equipment I have.

Feedback

Get the shot, it doesn't matter if the conditions are right or not. You can always, as I did, help that along in post processing, with the help of another shot of the same place where the conditions are right so that you can blend everything together. We are so lucky to have the availability of the option to do this. Puritanism is all very wonderful and shows a remarkable talent and skill, but at the end of the day the most important thing is what you will have to show for it and to keep. I have this because I took the shot and I will never have that opportunity again. Never waste an opportunity, keep touching earth and have wonderful memories to keep and share.
