The photo was taken sort of spur of the moment. I was walking at a local conservation area (Limoine Point in Kingston Ontario) and I saw a group of Canadian geese taking off. Quite a few of the geese winter here in Kingston . I have taken many photos of the geese feeding or just wondering aroundand I decided I wanted to capture them in flight, and as you can see I succeeded.Time
If I remember right this photo was taken on a crisp and clear mid afternoon during the early springLighting
I didn't take lighting into consideration but I did keep composition in mind. I wanted a light background to help show contrast in the photoEquipment
The camera I use is a Nikon D 5100. The lens I used was a AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300 mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR. I love this lens, the focus is so fast, clear and really captures great wildlife photos. I use it quite a lot when I want to get in close. The photo geek stuff on this is Aperture - 6.3, ISO - 400 and shutter speed - 1/1600 secInspiration
When I shot this photo I was in the middle of a 365 project. I was really just trying to find my style and was being inspired by many things. I have always loved photos of birds in flight that I have seen in publications like National Geographic and Canadian Geographic. Also my dad seems to know everything about birds and animals, so I always tried to impress him with my photos of birds.Editing
In this photo I did very little post processing. I was just beginning photography and knew very little about editing and post processing. About all I did to this photo was crop it in closer, sharpened it and tweaked the colors so they seemed natural. In my camera bag
The equipment I carry with me is usually my camera body a Nikon D 5100, zoom lens (AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300 mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR) Prime lens ( Nikkor 50 mm F/ 1.4 G ) Kit lens ( AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR) and my trusty first lens (AF-S Nikkor 18-70 mm f/3.5 - 4.5 G ED) I also carry a Hoya circular polarizerFeedback
About the only advice I can give about taking photos like this one is to always be ready. I find to capture wildlife you need to be very observant and lucky haha If you would like to photograph birds, I find it best to be very quiet and watch them for a little bit of time, get to know their patterns. This works very well when you are trying to capture smaller birds as they are feeding. You will see that the fly to a feeder or tree, feed for a moment, fly away and return a few moments later. If you can follow them and figure out the pattern you will have pretty good success. I also do my best to focus on the eyes. It seems to give more emotion to the photo as well as keeps the body of the bird in focus as it moves rapidly
