Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken around seven years ago in the Sahara desert near the end of a trip to North Africa where me and my family had stayed. We took a weekend trip down to the desert to watch the sunrise.

Time

I took this at around 5am and was still very groggy from the journey. My family and I had been on a two day trip in the Sahara where we rode camels and did whatever there is to be done in the desert. I was only eleven at the time I took this photo but it's always remained one of my favourite memories from traveling.

Lighting

For me there is no need to use anything artificial when capturing a sun rise like this, the beauty speaks for this self. My only wish is that eleven year old me had a better camera.

Equipment

At the time the only camera I had was a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T70 and that was all the equipment I used at the time. Particularly because it's not so ideal to ride a camel with camera equipment, plus i don't think my pocket money at the time could afford anything close to what I needed. Although it rarely sees light anymore, it has captured some lovely shots.

Inspiration

I remember stepping off the bus onto the sand and being so confused at how cold it was. However, after thirty minutes of huddling together, a haze of deep orange pushed over the sand hills in front and the glow covered the surroundings. I knew it was a moment I never wanted to forget.

Editing

It was a nightmare trying to recover this image and attempting to resolve sizing issues so I resulted to framing it in a black border. This obviously lost any sort of professional element I could have tried to go for but I think there is enough natural contrast and the sun itself provides a great focus area near the centre that issues I had post-processing seemed less of a problem to me.

In my camera bag

Well I think a camera always comes in handy. My number one is my Canon EOS 1100D. I swap lenses constantly so I'm usually carrying a minimum of three with me but the most fun I find is the fish-eye lens and I don't feel as guilty if it breaks as you don't feel the need to sell the clothes of your back to replace it. But if it's all the same, I would definitely sell my clothes to replace a lens - who out of us would't?

Feedback

All sunrise shots are breath-taking, so anyone trying to capture them has that on their side, its one of the plus sides to the beauty of nature. For me, when the scene I'm looking at is so powerful that the image imprints in my brain, that's when I know to take a photo. I just wish the resulting image was half as comparable!
