Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Fort Worth Texas zoo

Time

This image was taken in the mid afternoon which not normally a time of day I ever choose to shoot wildlife. But as I looked through I knew the expression and the location would work well for what I wanted to convey to viewer...

Lighting

The light was harsh that day, but for this image I could see magic through my 600mm lens. The contrast of the dark shadows and the bright reflections of a white wall in front of the large male Orangutan were perfect. The wall like a giant softbox gave me perfect light with a little hard edge to detail the course hair of this man of the forest. Sitting in a shadowed doorway the background fell to almost solid black from the exposure of the mid day sun and It all came together as I released the shutter to expose a near perfect image.

Equipment

I was shooting with a Nikon D-700 and a Manfrotto Tripod and a 600mm Tamron lens, no other light was used other then available since the distance to my subject was around 50 yards and and flash

Inspiration

I grew up at a young age spending most of my free time in a deep pine forest up north and even as a child I was always inspired by things in nature everything from brooks running over green moss covered stones in the spring to the deep contrast of the bare birch trees standing alone in the snow covered landscape. My love of nature is just something that comes natural, and I am always enticed when it falls into the perfect light

Editing

Post processing of this image was simple a little boost of contrast, saturation of color and a touch of burn for the perfect background.

In my camera bag

That depends I like to pack light if I'm going to be moving around a lot, but normally a wide angle with good glass is a must and a 60mm macro is always nice to have. A long lens in the range of 200 to 600mm is great for reaching out and capturing far away images and two camera bodies so your always ready for the long and short shots. You never forget that great shot you missed because you had to stop and change lenses...

Feedback

Always look at the light and make it work for you, it doesn't matter if your focus and framing is perfect if you have bad light you might as well pack up and go home. I have passed up lots of great shots because the time of day wrong, a great image is all about light. Shoot early, shoot late, cloudy and rainy days are great times to shoot and if you must shoot in mid day sun make it work for you. solid shadows, large reflective areas or walls are great for catch lights in the eyes if you learn how to use them. Mostly have fun and chasing the light Jim Kavanagh
