Behind The Lens

Location

This is Glasgow City Centre after the night clubs have closed. I am also a filmmaker and Glasgow is the perfect city for those gritty, film noir shots.

Time

Around 4am before the sun rises on the all night party people. The streets are pretty clear and everything takes on a real sinister vibe. The darkness begins to make assertions about the character in the photo.

Lighting

Absolutely no lights provided by my hand. The only light source is from the street lamps and I think it adds to the real life quality of the capture. The woman has not been prearranged, the scene has not been fabricated.

Equipment

This was shot on a very old mobile phone camera. Even in the short space of time we have had camera's in our phones, the technology has advanced a great deal since this photo was taken. Even as my kit has expanded and progressed far beyond these beginnings, this photo still catches my eye.

Inspiration

I was really just beginning to catch the photographer's bug and was constantly snapping everything. It was simply one of those eureka like moments when you see the shot and can't take your eyes off it until you capture it. Even the simplest parts of your day like waiting on a taxi can suddenly become opportunity.

Editing

Really only the black and white filter with some brightness/contrast work. Again, it was before I had fully delved into the capabilities of Photoshop and filter packs but I doubt i'd change much in the post work. Without the film noir aspects provided with the post shoot processing, this photo has nothing of its current allure.

In my camera bag

Now I carry a Canon 100D with a crisp 50mm lens for some distance from my subjects, a 10mm wide angle for wide distortion or crazy personal close ups and a couple of old vintage lenses for landscapes and vintage looks.

Feedback

Be careful about trawling City Centres at night when night clubs have just let out. Keep your eyes and ears well and truly open if you are carrying a full kit around because there's a good chance of encounters with drunkards. I try and keep my kit light, not to linger very long in any particular spot and try and enlist someone to accompany you. If possible, do your research by scouting during the day when it's a bit safer and finding the exact shots you want.
