Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Everglades. A few friends and I were on a self-guided kayak tour through gator-infested waters when a couple of these brilliant flowers caught my eye.

Time

This picture was taken in the early afternoon hours of a hot February day- which is strange to me as I am from an area where we experience all four seasons (and relatively cool summers at that). But the angle of the sun worked very well to lend some dimensional character to the pedals via their shadows.

Lighting

I prefer natural lighting in general, and this capture displays the reason. The subject is just so rich and authentic when lit naturally.

Equipment

This shot is actually taken with my Motorola Razr M smartphone! At the time, I just wanted to document some of the things we encountered while exploring, but when I saw it on my monitor later on, I was compelled to share it.

Inspiration

I was intrigued by the way the flower seemed to be floating in space, versus on a calm surface. It just seemed so surreal.

Editing

The only post-processing I did on this picture was with my stock photo-editing software that came on my computer. A quick crop and slight adjustment of the exposure dials was all I wanted to do. I really like how the flower pops the way it did that day in the glades.

In my camera bag

In my bag I have a Canon Rebel SL1. I like it for the quiet shutter and the versatility it lends to a bumbling beginner like myself. I carry two lenses always: one 18-55mm and one 55-250mm. I also keep a polarizing lens cap which I can switch between lenses or just leave off, as well as an extra battery. About 60% of the time, I will also carry a tripod along.

Feedback

Try different angles, different specimens, and always take lots of pictures! Pay attention to what exactly draws your eye to the subject. I always try to dramatize my subject in order to convey my fascination with it by sharing the context. The framing and composition should include the context in which the subject captured you, before you captured it back.
