Location
This photo was taken at a state fair ground in Washington State. The event was a concert featuring Jeremy Camp (who is the singer on the stage). I was (obviously!) nearer the back of the crowd.Time
A warm summer evening.Lighting
The stage lighting illuminated the performers, and provided a great contrast to silhouette the upraised hands in the crowd.Equipment
I used a Nikon D70 with a Nikon 28-105 (f/4, ISO 800, 1/80th second), handheld. No flash, no tripod.Inspiration
I was primarily interested in capturing images of the performers, but the forest of upraised hands made a great composition.Editing
I adjusted the lighting in post-production using Levels to tone down the brightness of the stage lights. I also used Levels to bring down the black values in the upraised hands. In my camera bag
I don't have my D70 any longer, but currently in my bag are a Sony A7R III, Sony 24-105 f/4, Sony 70-300 4.5 / 5.6, Sony 50 1.8, Nissin i60A speedlight, sync cord, extra batteries, Custom Brackets flash bracket, Rogue Flashbender reflector, and snacks. :-)Feedback
Event photography happens fast. Carry only as much gear as you think you'll need (to save weight), and periodically "turn around" to see if there are other interesting compositions the crowd isn't looking at.
