Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken out at Lime Cay which is the main islet of the Port Royal Cays off Port Royal, Jamaica. Located 15 minutes by boat from Port Royal, it has a small beach which makes it a popular location for recreation and sunbathing. It is a regular hotspot for post-party-goers, and during holiday season (Summer and Christmas) weekends the island is often swarmed with boats, music and socialites. Lime Cay measures 380 meters northwest-southeast, and is up to 80 meters wide, measuring 2 ha in area. About half of the area is wooded, the rest is sand and coral. It has no infrastructure except for a small open building used for the preparation and selling of food. The building is located at 17°55?06.36?N 76°49?11.96?W.

This photo was taken at sunset which was about 5:30pm.

Lighting

This photo was taken using natural light only.

Equipment

Canon 50D with 28-135mm zoom lens and FLD filter

Inspiration

After a long day of shooting models and products for a spirits company a friend of mine was helping to pack up and went down to the water to wash off her hands. I saw the silhouette and immediately I got excited and started shooting. As I was shooting I saw the boat approaching in the distance and asked her to stay as she was as I thought it would make an even more interesting shot. I wanted to add something more so I used an FLD filter to change the mood/ colors a bit. I knew exactly where I wanted to place the boat in the shot so I timed the boat and took a few shots. This was my favorite of the set.

Editing

Yes. I did very little post-processing. I bumped up the vibrance of the colors and increased the shadows/black tones a bit to add a little more pop/contrast to the image.

Feedback

If you see something that you think could be a great shot, do not hesitate. Instead make preparations and go for it. Timing is everything so be sure to have your settings right to get the shot you want the way you want it when the timing is right. When I saw the boat coming, I knew I did not have much time so I check my lighting, put on the FLD filter and did a few quick test shots to ensure it would be exactly as I wanted it when the boat was in position. Another piece of advice would be to look for elements that add to the shot. This shot would have been great with the silhouette of the woman alone but adding the boat made it even more interesting.
