Location
This photo was taken in Shothole Canyon in the Cape Range national Park west of Exmouth on the west coast of Western Australia, during a 5 month caravan trip my wife and I took in 2012 when we explored much of northern Australia, from Brisbane in the east, north and west through The Barkly Tableland, Katherine in the NT, the Kimberley and the Pilbara to Coral Cove in the west and then back again via Darwin, Kakadu, the Gulf and cairns.Time
That day's trip, without the van, over rough gravel roads saw us in the depths of the canyon in early afternoon, with the early western light shining strongly on the various rock layers and creating the shadows and light and dark patterns which excited me. This shot appealed to me more than the several others taken in the same area. While it is basically a landscape composition, the abstract qualities of the patterns of light and dark and the colour juxtapositions seem to highlight the feeling of eternity leant by the stark branches of the small foreground tree.Lighting
The lighting was the driver for the whole composition. The photo is basically a travel snapshot made lovely by the lighting conditions.Equipment
This was taken with a small Fujifilm digital handheld camera with no accessories. The viewpoint entailed some slipping, sliding and climbing to get the composition to my liking.Inspiration
It was a great day, hot and sunny, and we were in a marvellous rugged bush and canyon environment. The colours and patterns on the rock faces, contrasted with the sparse vegetation, enhanced by the strong sunlight all came together all along our route. This was one of more than 100 shots taken that day.Editing
Post processing entailed only minor cropping and a slight increase in contrast. In my camera bag
I now use a Nikon P500 bridge style digital camera with 40x zoom lens, often mounted on a very solid Manfrotto tripod. The kit includes a lens shroud which allows the mounting of filters, of which I have so far only added a UV type. Also carried are spare batteries and chargers and a spare memory card.Feedback
Always look for interesting lines, patterns, contrasts, perspectives and the like and try to compose shots as an artist composes a painting. A simple rule with landscapes is to try for a framing element in the foreground to enhance the feeling of depth, distance and perspective.
