Purple Coneflower, Echinacea purpurea, is a wildflower that only occurs in a glade in north Florida and is restricted in the wild to a very small area of distribution in Florida. Purple Coneflower does best in in most parts of Florida in partial shade and moist, but well drained conditions.
The honey bee enjoying the flower nectar is joined by a gray hairstreak butterfly, also called the bean lycaenid or cotton square borer. It is a member of the Lycaenidae family, known as the gossamer-winged butterflies and the second-largest family of butterflies. It is one of the most common hairstreaks in North America, ranging over nearly the entire continent.
