Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the deck of our home. We live near the top of a hill and the skies are huge and incredibly complex at times!

Time

It was just after 7:30 in the evening, in mid-April.

Lighting

What you see is what you get. The colours and clouds can be pretty intense. I work with what is there.

Equipment

This was my Fuji X-T10, with my 16mm at F1.4. I work hand held. I own tripods, but I find them time consuming and cumbersome. No flash.

Inspiration

The sky. I knew it was going to be incredible.

Editing

Not much, no. I using the developing suite, rather than editing.

In my camera bag

Lens cleaners, extra batteries, memory cards, a couple of lenses.

Feedback

Get your white balance right. It makes such a difference. I work with Kelvin. Sky photos like this have so many different components, but there's always one that catches your attention. Focus on that. Develop around that element. All the colours in this photo are in the RAW image. Try to get it right in camera, understand your manual features. You won't always get it right, but developing takes on a whole new realm of fun when you get it right.
