Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken next to a Lake in Telford, Shropshire. The lake is just down the road from a wedding venue I was shooting at called the Buckatree Hotel which is situated at the base of the Wrekin.

Time

This photo was taken about 6.30pm during April. Although the mild temperature the lake side not only proved tricky to get too in a wedding dress due to the brambles but also a LOT colder. In the end myself and groom ended up carrying the bride over our shoulders to avoid the sharp thorns of the brambles lol.

Lighting

I have dying to do a lake side sunset shot for some time now and as we got closer and closer to sunset I started to realise that not only was the sun set perfect but it was in the most amazing position to bounce light across the water and create the most amazing reflections. I added in one diffused portable flash to my camera right to cast a little more light down the front of the couple.

Equipment

This was shot on my Canon R5 with a 24 - 70mm L series lens, a godox ad400 pro and on camera trigger.

Inspiration

I am absolutely in love with sunsets and the colours they produce in such a small window of time. This teamed together with the beauty of water made for a compelling photo. It was a risk getting to the side of the lake with a bride and groom but well worth the effort.

Editing

This image is processed in lightroom using my own self made presets. All of my images are treated with a base preset and I often create two of three different styled versions of the same image to give now only the client more creative choice but also as I love manipulating images to add that extra wow factor.

In my camera bag

My typical wedding kit bag consists of the following: - Canon R5 - Canon 5d Mark IV - Canon 24 - 70mm F2.8 L series Lens - Canon 70 - 200mm F2.8 L series Lens - Canon 16 - 35mm F4 Lens - 3 x Canon 600ex II speedlights and trigger - 3 x Godox AD400 Pro - Various softboxes, diffusers and light modifiers - Many Many Many AA batteries - Canon wireless trigger -

Feedback

My advice for capturing images like this is to place the couple where you want them with the sun directly behind them. Without any flashes on get your camera settings tuned in to capture the beauty of the sunset ignoring the couple for a minute. Once you have the ambient light perfect use a flash just to your left or right and quite high up to light the couple. You want the diffused light to fall just in front of the couple so that its not too intense. Get the couple to interact with each other to create a lovely nature image.... Lastly get your assistant to toss the veil up in the air and run so that it floats back down and fire multiple shots to find the perfect one.
