At first glance, it looks as though snow, or even some white flower blossoms, have created a beautiful looking tree. Upon closer look, however, what is actually beautifying this maple tree is hoarfrost. Hoarfrost occurs when very cold air moves into a region that has fairly high humidity in place. The frost begins to create what looks like cactus spines all over the trees, plants and other things in the area. The spines in this picture are approximately 1-inch, or longer, in length. To me, it really does look very beautiful. The frost is actually quite short-lived. Not too long after the sun rose, the hoarfrost melted and was completely gone. I'm glad I got a few shots, as hoarfrost is somewhat rare when to compared to other types of frost.
