The Mackinac Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Straits of Mackinac to connect the non-contiguous Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan. Opened in 1957, the bridge is the third longest in total suspension in the world and at 8,164 feet it is the longest suspension bridge between anchorages in the Western Hemisphere. The length of the bridges main span is 3,800 feet. Including the long lead-ups to the anchorages, from shoreline to shoreline the bridge has a total length of 5 miles
