Location
This photo was taken at Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto, Japan. The area has thousands of these Torii gates winding up a long hilly trail. At the bottom it is full of tourists, but as you get near the top the crowds thin and it becomes a very beautiful and peaceful place, with the light coming through the shrines in an empty spot I took this shot, with the gates pulling you onwardTime
This was taken at about 12:40pm, the light was bright but the trees around the gates provided enough shade to make for a lovely light to take this photoLighting
The dappled shade from the trees allows beautiful beams of light to stream between the gates, with the humid misty air making the scene very ethereal!Equipment
I used my Canon 100d with a standard lens, but with a polarised lens filter.Inspiration
I wanted to capture the vivid vermillion gates and the zen moment of being alone with the torii gates as the tourist crowds thinnedEditing
Yes I did some processing to soften some harsh light due to the photo being taken at middayIn my camera bag
My Canon 100d, a spare lens and battery especially for night photos where the slow shutter speeds eat up the battery life! I don’t use tripods and try to rest the camera on natural objects so the photos feel like you are really in the scene!Feedback
You can never take too many photos, sometimes the best photos are ones you didn’t expect to come out well. Be patient and wait for crowds to thin so you can capture beautiful scenes
