Behind The Lens

Location

This image was from a long awaited trip to Bempton Cliffs. The weather wasn't ideal but the spectacle was incredible.and not just visually the sounds of the Gannets,Razorbills,Guillemots all trying jostle and fight to keep their spot on a very crowded cliff.

Time

The image was taken late afternoon the weather was overcast and nothing like what the Weathergirl predicted. I love Gannets and recording how the nesting pairs interact. I spotted a brooding bird I had a clear view of and then it was a waiting game and luckily I was blessed with the returning partner bringing dinner and a passionate thankful greeting.

Lighting

The lighting was quite flat being an overcast day so i had to crank up the Iso to allow me to maintain a useable speed.

Equipment

I used a Canon 7d and a Canon 5.6 is 100-400 stabiliser off on a Bean bag. No other equipment used

Inspiration

The Gannets are my inspiration from their incredible ability to dive 30mtrs at a 100kms per hour to their Compassion and faithfullness against all odds. I could be a Gannet.

Editing

I still had to crop the image and because it was quite dark lifted the shadows so you could see the young Gannet but not much else was changed.

In my camera bag

I nornally carry a telephoto lense due but I also carry my Canon 50nm and for wider shots my trusty Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 and a Manfrotto Ballhead Tripod. I am mostly self taught but my love for wildlife and photography is always in my bag.

Feedback

My advice and Id say quite obvious really is try to plan best you can. Make the most of the weather it rarely ends up what you want it to be. Visualise what you want the shot to be.Dont burst shots like a shotgun hoping for the best. Enjoy it and connect with your subject.
