Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the baclony railings of my small apartment.

Time

I took this photo on 21st April, 2024 at 20:30:41. This was about 10 minutes before the sun went down. It took several days for the light to be right, as most days the needed sunset was hidden behind heavy cloud.

Lighting

The whole idea was to have the sunset behind the ice letters of Viewbug.. This was most challenging due to the British weather and the fact that the entire lighting scheme was based soley around a sunset.

Equipment

I used my trusty Nikon D810 with a 70-200mm f/2.8. The lens was set to 200mm at f/6.3 1/60sec ISO-64

Inspiration

As soon as I saw the competition brief, I had the idea to make the word Viewbug in ice, with a shallow depth of field and a sunset background. I made molds for the ice letters in a 3d program, 3d printed them, popped them in a freezer and waited everyday until sunset. Day one was the best sunset but I broke one of the letters so only had Viebug, for the next few days there were no suitable sunsets until I finally got this shot before my Viewbug melted. I know I can improve things with a more desirable sunset, so watch this space :)

Editing

Just normal post processing in Photoshop using the highlight, shadow, slight dehaze and levels. I tried use the camera settings above post processing.

In my camera bag

I normally have a selection of about 3 of the following lenses in my bag with my Nikon D810.. Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR Nikon 135 Ai f/2 Manual focus AF-S Micro Nikkor 105 AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED VR (With broken auto focus, so manual) Nikon 50mm f/1.8 It's so difficult to know what to leave behind..

Feedback

If you get an idea for a similar shot to my one here which requires easy yet time consuming set up, just stick with it, it'll be worth it :)
